Niamh Lewis (Chair)

Niamh graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh in 2008 and spent several years in clinical practice focusing on equine reproduction in Ireland, Australia, UK, USA and Saudi Arabia. She then completed a residency programme at the University of Liverpool, subsequently becoming a European and American registered specialist in Equine Reproduction in 2015. Her PhD was focused on developing a metabolic approach towards optimising equine in vitro oocyte maturation and was a collaborative project between the University of Liverpool, University of Manchester and Texas A&M University. Niamh has established an Equine ART laboratory within the School of Veterinary Medicine in UCD to continue her research in equine assisted reproduction, specifically energy metabolism of the equine oocyte and embryo during in vitro maturation and culture and how it relates to developmental competence and health of resulting offspring. Niamh attended ISER XI, New Zealand, in 2014 and gave an oral presentation of her PhD work at ISER XII, Cambridge, UK in 2018.

Julie Storme
BSc(hons) BVM&S MSc DACT MRCVS

Julie achieved her veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2015. She then spent several thoroughbred breeding seasons working between New Zealand and the UK. In 2019 she completed a residency in Equine Reproduction from Colorado State University. Julie is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and currently owns an equine reproduction clinic in Co Meath, Ireland. Her main interests lie in all aspects of advanced reproductive techniques as well as problem mare management.

Jennie Henderson
BVSc MSc Cert EM(StudMed) Dip ECEIM MRCVS

Jennie graduated from Liverpool University in 2002 and joined Newcombe and East, “shuttling” between the UK and Australia to complete an internship at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital and stud seasons in the Hunter Valley, prior to undertaking The Horse Trust Residency in Equine Internal medicine at Edinburgh University. Following the residency, Jennie worked at Godolphin’s Kildangan Stud for three seasons, before moving to the newly built Newmarket Equine Hospital, where she spent 7 years running the neonatal intensive care service. Jennie is currently working as resident veterinarian for Ballylinch Stud.

Barbara Murphy
BScEq PhD GDipUTL

Associate Professor Barbara Anne Murphy is Head of Equine Science and Programme Director for the BAgrSc Animal Science-Equine degree at University College Dublin. Following a BSc in Equine Science from the University of Limerick, she spent a year working within the Thoroughbred industry before pursuing a PhD in Veterinary Science at the Gluck Equine Research Centre, University of Kentucky. Her scientific research investigates how circadian and circannual rhythms are involved in important reproductive phenomena and how disruption of these rhythms impacts growth, health and performance in the horse. Founder of Equilume Ltd., headquartered in Co Kildare, Barbara’s research led to the development of the Equilume Light Mask, a significant innovation that has globally impacted photoperiod manipulation for horses. Barbara attended and presented at ISER XI, New Zealand, in 2014 and ISER XII, Cambridge, UK in 2018.

Meta Osborne
MBV Cert ESM MRCVS

Meta is an equine vet with a lifetime’s experience in clinical equine reproduction and is co-owner of Tinnakill House, a leading commercial Irish stud farm. She is a Past-President of the Irish Veterinary Association and the Veterinary Council of Ireland. She was the first female Senior Steward of the Turf Club, a former board member of Horse Racing Ireland and co-founder of WINR (Women’s Irish Network for Racing).

Sean Finan
MVB DACT

Sean graduated from University College Dublin in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine. He undertook an internship at Fethard Equine Hospital. In 2011 he moved to Australia and completed a residency in Theriogenology at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital under the mentorship of Dr Angus McKinnon, passing the board certifying exam of the American College of Theriogenologists in 2014. After this he worked as a resident vet for Arrowfield Stud, a large thoroughbred stud in Australia’s Hunter Valley, with the occasional northern hemisphere season in Newmarket, UK and Ireland. In 2023 he moved to Ireland permanently where he works for an equine hospital on the Curragh, Co. Kildare, where the mare population is predominantly Thoroughbred.
